Windham Mountain Ski Trip

Every year our students at the Pathfinder School take a field trip to Windham Mountain. This year we were fortunate enough to have two sunny days with fresh powder. The Adaptive Sport Foundation at Windham Mountain did a spectacular job helping our students through this amazing opportunity. We had so much fun and we are looking forward to next year!

National wear RED day

"The color red represents strength, joy and power and during American Heart Month in February, it symbolizes the fight against heart disease in women.
One in three women die of heart disease or stroke every year, according to the American Heart Association. Education and lifestyle changes, however, can prevent 80 percent of cardiac events.
“This is an important opportunity to raise awareness that heart disease is not just a man’s disease, to stop and honor the many people struggling with heart disease, and to celebrate the advances we’ve seen over the years against heart disease and stroke,” said American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown.
The cause behind the color is Go Red For Women, a movement the AHA started more a decade ago to fight a life-threatening lack of awareness about heart disease in women, which extended to many physicians and researchers." - http://blog.heart.org/red-sweeps-nation-month-support-womens-heart-health/
In honor of this day all of our Pathfinder School students and staff came up with their "Why" in supporting this cause. Watch the video below to find out our many reasons on why this is so important to our school.

Hoops For Heart Finale Event

In December of 2014, Pathfinder School celebrated their second annual American Heart Association Event: Hoops For Heart. Our students learned about their heart and improved their basketball skills. Every morning one student went to each classroom and presented a morning announcement; which consisted of a heart fact. In P.E. students learned how to dribble, shoot, and learn the game of basketball. Teamwork and communication were two social skills taught during this unit.

At the finale event all students that were present were able to show off their basketball skills through various games and stations. First we played Musical Shooting (Similar to musical chairs). The students would shoot baskets until the music stopped then the student's would run to the chairs to try and get a seat. Cody was our Musical Shooting winner. Afterwards the students moved throughout stations: shooting, passing, dribbling and pinning a basketball in the basket. Next student participation certificates and awards were handed out. At the end of the event students were able to pie staff in the face and silly string our principal, Mr. Adams.

My favorite part of this event was announcing to everyone that we reached our donation goal of $800.00 this year and passed the goal with $800.50. I am so proud of all of my students for going outside their comfort zone and asking for donations. Communication can be difficult; especially when talking with someone you do not know. Each student put in a lot of hard work this year and they were recognized for it.These kids are awesome!  I am thankful for the staff that I work with at Pathfinder School and Pathfinder Village. I could not do this event without everyone's help. It truly is amazing to see everyone come together.

Hoops In The Pool!

This marked the end of our first week in our Hoops For Heart unit. In P.E. the students have learned about a young girl named Cassandra who needed a heart transplant. Cassandra and her family received help from the American Heart Association so that this opportunity was made possible for her. Our students are learning new ways to volunteer and collect donations so that the students can help other kids who need help from the American Heart Association. At the same time the students are having fun learning new basketball skills. Today,  the students decided to take their shooting and passing skills into the pool. Lots of cheers, hoops and hollers were given to each peer while making baskets, catching the ball and having successful passes.

PATHFINDER SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOOT HOOPS FOR THEIR HEARTS AND HELP SAVE LIVES

Students at Pathfinder school in Edmeston, NY are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. On December 1, 2014 Pathfinder School will host its second annual Hoops For Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth.

Hoops For Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn’t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese.

“By including physical activity into their daily routines, kids can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart disease,“ said Tabitha Poplaski “By raising money through Hoops For Heart, we are preventing heart disease and obesity for the next generation of Americans. Kids are literally jumping into a heart healthier life while becoming passionate about raising money for other kids with sick hearts.”

For over 18 years, millions of students have played basketball and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Hoops For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.
